Building Safe Spaces

October 1 - October 31

Dell Darnell (they/them) is the founder of The Dapper Hammer and is a carpenter and woodworking educator. Darnell started The Dapper Hammer, Michigan’s first trans-owned teaching workshop, several years ago to chase a dream of supporting the community with their hands, building beautiful things, and sharing their passion of teaching people who are not traditionally represented in the trades including girls, youth, women, trans, and non-binary folks. Darnell loves the energy and empowerment that comes from a space designed for inclusivity and diversity especially when it’s a niche that has historically been exclusive of so many.

When they are not swinging a hammer, Darnell is the Director of Services for OutFront Kalamazoo and oversees all DEI training, two housing programs, and all mental, physical, and social health services.

Darnell holds a master’s degree in International Non-Profit Administration from Western Michigan University and has been the recipient of several awards for their work advancing the movement for justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
