Docent are among our most dedicated and hard-working volunteers, helping us complete our mission to bring art to everyone.
Interested in Becoming a Docent?
Docents are trained to help visitors of all ages find a deeper understanding and appreciation of art via our exhibitions. To become a KIA docent, you need no prior knowledge of art, just a willingness to learn, the enthusiasm to share your love of learning, comfort with public speaking, and a flexible schedule. Candidates will learn about touring and engagement techniques, as well as art history and art processes. Docents sign up to lead 1-2 tours a month, for a total of 15 per year. For more information, email the museum education department.
It’s rewarding and fun to share the knowledge of art as we hope to inspire and transform inquiring minds of all ages and abilities.
Taking docent training classes is like being in an exciting art history course — plus you have an opportunity to interact with young people and expose them to all kinds of wonderful art.
After ending my full time work, I was looking to spend time around beauty and learn something as well. The classes were interesting and made use of various formats to enrich our learning and be able share this with visitors to the KIA.
The art history training was like attending a college class for free!
Becoming a docent is an opportunity to be in a lovely environment surrounded by like-minded friends and staff who encourage and support all endeavors. Being a docent is a gift to myself.
