Join interdisciplinary artist and world-builder JooYoung Choi as she shares insights into her studio practice and creative process. Choi is the creator of The Cosmic Womb, a highly structured imaginary world where she develops narratives that blend autobiographical and fantastic elements. Her work explores themes of identity, resilience, transformation, transracial adoption, birth family reunion, immigration, and systemic oppression. Through painting, installation, animation, video art, puppet-making, and sculpture, she brings complex stories to life in dynamic and thought-provoking ways.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1982, Choi immigrated to Concord, New Hampshire, in 1983 through adoption. While completing her BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Choi returned to South Korea and reunited with her birth family.
Since graduating with an MFA from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 2012, Choi has exhibited in numerous venues across the U.S. Her work has been featured by various media outlets, and she has received many grants and awards, including support from the National Endowment for the Arts and Artadia. She has participated in numerous residencies to expand her artistic vision.
