Position Title: Custodian

Reports to: Director of Facilities

Classification: Full Time; Non-Exempt

Summary of Position: The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts seeks a Custodian to take pride in helping keep our facilities spotless. The Custodian maintains the building and grounds of KIA by keeping the galleries, offices, classrooms, restrooms, and grounds clean.

 

The ability to work regularly on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays thru Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 11:0 p.m. is required. Special events or extra shifts will consistently offer opportunities for additional hours.

 

Responsibilities:

Custodian Daily Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Keeps building and property surroundings in clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs routine maintenance activities.
  • Performs heavy cleaning duties.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, or vacuums floors.
  • Gathers and empties trash.
  • Scrubs, sanitizes, and supplies restroom facilities.
  • Remove snow as required for the visitor’s and employees’ safety.
  • Dust furniture, walls, and equipment.
  • Cleans windows, mirrors, and partitions with soap and other cleansers.
  • Mixes cleaning solutions and chemicals in containers in preparation for cleaning, according to instructions.
  • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Cleans and polishes fixtures and furniture.
  • Shampoos or steam-cleans carpets and rugs.
  • Cleans and polishes furniture and fixtures.
  • Manages inventory of cleaning supplies.
  • Notifies managers regarding the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Inspects interior lighting for burnt-out bulbs and replace them.
  • Perform minor repairs and special maintenance projects on occasion.
  • Set up/take down furniture for classes and special events
  • Run errands/make deliveries for staff and teachers on occasion.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures

 

Job Qualifications:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for many hours
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion for long periods of time
  • Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning solutions
  • Background in handling, mixing, and using cleaning chemicals
  • Ability to use cleaning products and chemicals safely.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards safety rules
  • Communication skills
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders and work at particular heights.
  • Ability to work independently while following directions.
  • Experience working with cleaning supplies and equipment.

Education and Experience Preferences:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic math skills
  • High school courses in shop may be preferred for jobs involving repair work
  • Driver’s license

 

Physical Job Requirements: While performing this job, the employee will be required to sit, stand and work, lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally, and perform repetitive hand movements. Employees must be able to communicate verbally.
